Artist's Profile: Simon Birtall produces his impressionistic paintings on canvas and builds up colour in multiple layers to create vibrant optical mixes, favouring scenes with striking contrasts of light and shadow. To enable Simon to work quickly and spontaneously, he works mainly in acrylics. His technique has developed over the years and has been influenced by many artists including Seurat, Monet, Sargent and Brangwyn. He likes to give his paintings a strong sense of colour depth, built upon a strong foundation drawing. Most of Simon's latest landscape paintings are scenes of the Cornish countryside. He is particularly fond of the Cornish coastline and has painted a series of evocative paintings of the beach and seaside scenes. Trained as a freelance illustrator, Simon has also produced illustration work for book covers, greetings cards, advertising, magazines and food packaging for clients including Hallmark, BBC and NatWest Bank.
